The Tanzanian economy depends heavily on agriculture, which accounts for almost half of GDP, provides over 80% of all exports, and employs approximately 80% of the local workforce. Unfortunately, the climatic conditions and topography of Tanzania limit crop cultivation to less than 5 % of the land area. Currently, the total life expectancy is 51.5 years, with women living an average of two years longer than men. The Infant mortality rate is estimated at 71 deaths per 1,000 live birth and the population per physician is estimated at approximately 45,000 people. With a population growth of 2.07 percent, the Tanzanian government, the IMF and The World Bank together with bilateral donors are working to strengthen Tanzania’s economic infrastructure and alleviate poverty.
