On our Estates

At Burka a balance is sought between the traditions of the past natural farming techniques, and the high-cost, high-production and high-impact techniques of modernized agronomy. Under such practices, the sheltering forests were cleared, and dense hedgerows introduced. While these monocultural farms produced more beans, the natural habitats of countless species were disrupted, and the need for agrochemicals increased. Burka has always been managed by active conservationists.

In Our Forests

The pride of Burka is its three natural corners, comprised of the Burka Hill, the Burka Forest and the Baboon Forest. The Management is directing the company towards the protection of natural habitats and wildlife sanctuaries. Burka Estates have often been called the lungs of Arusha, and represent one of the last indigenous plots of nature in the growing city of Arusha. The farm maintains the greatest forest by far close to the city of Arusha, boasting plant varieties such as Orchids, Glories, Albizia schimperiana, Grevillea robusta, Cordia africana, and Acacia albida among hundreds of other species.

For Nature & Wildlife

The past few years has seen a large increase of wildlife on the Estates. A dedicated team of watchmen are employed and trained to protect these precious inhabitants. Buffer zones have been introduced as measures of protection, along with security patrols and wardens for each wildlife area. The shielding of such habitats is often difficult, but remains a priority of the Board of Directors, two of which are board members of Friends of Serengeti Switzerland. The Estates have adopted guidelines that are ecologically and socially responsible, while maintaining economic sustainability.
