About us

The name Burka originates from the Maasai word of “abundance” and “plentiful”, referencing the pristine and bountiful water spring that fed its surroundings to excess. In tribute to the lifeblood that is water, the founders of Burka Coffee Estates named the plantation in honour of the spring that still feeds the estate today. The two plantations, Burka and Selian, boarder the ever expanding Arusha town in the Arumeru District, 36.6 degrees East on 3.3 degrees South (GMT+2) on the lower slopes of Mt. Meru.

Our History

First coffee was planted and Burka Coffee Estates officially established by a German settler in 1899. Our Selian Estate can be traced back to 1904 when the Latvian born Bloom family started farming coffee. By 1918 Burka Estate was under British Protectorate, and ten years later a Swiss Group of investors bought the estate, which remains partly in Swiss hands today. Selian Estate was added in 1990.

Farm Tours

The charismatic history of the Estates is often a lure to visitors and potential buyers alike. Farm tours can be organized on a select basis for small groups, and a stay at the Arusha Coffee Lodge embedded in a coffee field is always a step into by-gone times. Being operated independently from Burka, the famous Coffee Lodge is always open to visitors. You may ask for a farm tour by email or experience Burka virtually.
