Farm Life

Tanzania provides a very unique perspective on the multi-ethnic and complex diversity of Africa. It is estimated that Tanzania has over 100 different Bantu languages, and over 130 ethnic groups that are indigenous to Africa, as it was the destination for many diverse migratory groups, immigrating and settling to create a mosaic of distinct looks, languages, religions and cultures. Respecting the different faiths, the farm has churches and mosques on-site.

Education

Since education was denied along tribal lines during Colonialism, the social infrastructure was so weak after independence that the educational system was almost non-existent. Tanzania was behind most other African countries, with less than one in eight students reaching Standard 7, and not a single University. Today, great strives have been made by the Tanzanian government to improve the educational system. Burka contributes its part in the education of children on the farms and in the community.

Support

Burka Coffee Estate’s immediate outreach programs concentrate on the employees of the two estates. All permanent employees and their families are given staff housing on the estate. Staff welfare is especially important to the management and owners of the company, as the very success of the company depends on them. For this reason the company has also established a committee consisting of employees, with an annual budget, to implement and improve estate assistance programs and support services.
